Green Lantern (Volume 2) #172 is an issue of the series Green Lantern (Volume 2) with a cover date of January, 1984.
Synopsis for "Judgment Day!"
With his year-long exile over, Green Lantern Hal Jordan goes before his peers in the Corps and the Guardians of the Universe to plead for the chance to return home to Earth. At first, the Guardians are reluctant about granting his request, until they ask him if he is willing to sacrifice his status as Green Lantern to return to Earth. In response, Hal claims that he'll be a Green Lantern until his last breath, and asks his masters not to force him to give away his humanity, like they did centuries ago. After a moment of silence, the Guardians allow him to end his exile.
Hal says goodbye to his fellow Green Lanterns and heads straight to Earth, specifically to Los Angeles' branch of Ferris Aircraft. Planning to surprise Carol, Hal sneaks into her office, but he gets quite a shock: he finds Carol with another man. Disappointment is an understatement to what Hal feels now, and he takes off to vent his frustration with the first crook he can find. In short time, he finds a hostage situation to fight the perpetrators. The cops thank him, but Green Lantern claims that he won't be around for very long.
Hal returns to Ferris Aircraft and starts packing his stuff, decided to get out of town. Suddenly, Carol walks in and asks him why he didn't visit her. Hal explains that he saw her with another man, and she says that it was a misunderstanding. That man is Clay Kendall, a new employee at Ferris, and she was only congratulating him for his work. With the situation clarified, the two lovers reunite after a year-long separation.

Synopsis for "Scavenger"
A Metalfinder on a distant planet finds a Green Lantern, the Green Man, felled by a Spider Guild ship, and tries to salvage his ring and power battery. When Green Man wakes up, he tries to warn the villagers about the invaders, but they refuse to give his ring and battery back. He then convinces them to keep the metals from the ship if they help him, and they accept the terms. Together, they trick the Spider Guild to fall into a trap, and they starts scavenging the materials. Disgruntled, the Metalfinder leaves the village, saying that they don't need him anymore and now everyone has metal. He asks Green Man to take away the riches of the other villagers so he could regain his job, but the Green Lantern refuses, and both men part ways.
