Quote1 I've served you well, Guardians. On your behalf, I've battled the vilest scum this universe has to offer... and I think I've earned my rest. There are thousands of inhabited worlds in my space sector, countless worthy beings... give this ring to one of them! I really don't care who you give it to -- just so long as it isn't mine anymore. Green Lantern (Volume 2) #181 is an issue of the series Green Lantern (Volume 2) with a cover date of October, 1984.

Synopsis for "Take This Job - - And Shove It!"

Hal Jordan flies straight to Oa to presence his renounce from the Green Lantern Corps when, suddenly, his path is cut by his fellow Green Lanterns, who try to convince him to change his mind. When Katma Tui learns that Hal is leaving because he wants to stay with the woman he loves, she snaps at him for his hypocrisy, because he convinced her to leave her husband behind and dedicate her life to the Corps. Hal has no words to express how sorry and ashamed he is about that, but he is resolved to continue with his decision nonetheless. He parts ways and heads to Oa alone.

Meanwhile, on Earth, John Stewart visits Ferris Aircraft to help rebuild the facilities. In Washington, D.C., Jason Bloch finds the Predator waiting in his office and kills him for hiring the Demolition Team to destroy Ferris. Before dying, the mortally wounded Jason walks to the hallway, where he whispers that he has proof that Hal Jordan is Green Lantern. However, his words fall in deaf ears, because the woman he is speaking to is none other than Major Diana Prince, a friend of Green Lantern. The words of Bloch's death reaches Carl Ferris, who celebrates the news. Still, he has the economic situation of the company to worry him. At that moment, Mr. Smith enters the room, offering his help to contribute to the company's recovery.

Finally in Oa, Hal gets to the Guardians's citadel and announces his decision to his masters. The Guardians, partly offended by his audacity to judge their wisdom, grant Hal his wish and strip him off his ring and uniform. Now a normal man, Hal bids farewell to his former comrades, including the young and saddened Arisia. She tries to confess her love to Hal, but her words come late, as Hal Jordan has been teleported to Earth.

In Carol's house, Hal visits his beloved and reveals that he took the final decision. Carol hugs and kisses him, partially with joy, but also sad that Hal had to make such a sacrifice to be with her. She worries that one day Hal might regret his decision, but he reassures him that the choice was his and he knows that he made the right thing. Still, deep inside he wonders if he did.
