"Funeral for a Hero": All of the world's superheroes, and even some villains, pay their final respects to Hal Jordan, who sacrificed himself to destroy the Sun-Eater during The Final Night event. They gather at Coast City's barren land in a churc

Quote1 And even though I'd like to learn more about Hal, I know enough to say I'm very proud to carry on the name Green Lantern. Hal made the ultimate sacrifice. I know he'll be remembered as the ultimate hero. Because of Hal Jordan ... we can all celebrate a new dawn. Quote2

Synopsis for "Funeral for a Hero"

All of the world's superheroes, and even some villains, pay their final respects to Hal Jordan, who sacrificed himself to destroy the Sun-Eater during The Final Night event. They gather at Coast City's barren land in a church designed by Kyle Rayner's ring. John Stewart and Donna Troy arrive in a rented car and quickly reunite with their friends. John meets Guy after so long, and Donna sees Nightwing, introducing him to Kyle.

The funeral starts, but Batman, instead of sitting with the rest of the mourners, stays aside, reluctant about paying respects to someone who became a villain. One by one, Superman, Guy, John, Black Canary, Flash, and Carol Ferris say some words about Hal. Finally, it's time for Kyle to talk, and he says that, even though he barely knew Hal, he will honor his legacy. Kyle dissolves the cathedral and with the help of Alan Scott and Swamp Thing, they grow a garden in the crater left by Coast City's bombing. Upon seeing Hal's emerald statue and hearing Superman's words, Batman says he can find it in his heart to forgive Hal.

Remembering his oath, Hal breaks free from the wreckage and faces the Qwardians again, even if he's at the disadvantage against their yellow weapons. Synopsis for "S.O.S. Green Lantern!"

This story is reprinted from Showcase #22.

An alien peace officer named Abin Sur of the Green Lantern Corps crash lands in the middle of the California desert. As he lays dying, he commands his power ring to seek out a worthy successor - one who proves to be fearless and strong-willed. Miles away, test pilot Hal Jordan is examining a flight simulator when a corona of green light envelops him, pulling him along with the simulator to the spot of Abin Sur's crashed vessel. Abin Sur tells Hal that the power of the ring selected him to take on the role of the Green Lantern. He gives him the ring, his costume, and a power battery. He instructs him that the ring will obey his every command but is powerless against anything colored yellow. He also tells him that the ring's energy must be charged from the power battery once every twenty-four hours. Hal agrees to accept the responsibility of wielding the ring in the cause of justice, and, with that, Abin Sur passes away. Hal Jordan is now Green Lantern.
