Synopsis for "The More Things Change..."
Jo Mullein is doing her best to keep Hal hidden from the ring hunters patrolling the streets and skies of Oa. She leads him to a series of underground tunnels and tells him not to use his ring, for Thaaros has given rings to a few mages and wizards stationed on Oa and if anyone uses power derived from the Source, those mages and wizards can immediately locate them. She pushes him into an exhaust vent with a large fan at the bottom that gently slows down their descent. Once they make their way throughout the tunnels, they reach their base of operations, inhabited by the few Green Lanterns opposing Thaaros.
Salaak and Two-Six are present, as well as Kyle, who sits alone a corner, constantly talking about something that has gone wrong with the emotional spectrum. Jo explains that, in the time, has gone, veteran Lanterns had been sent to faraway sectors, but only their rings returned, so Jo deduced someone was killing them. In their place arose new Lanterns, but they had no discipline or control, and they executed their duties with cruelty. Also, their rings could channel different lights from the spectrum. She returned to Oa to get answers, only to discover that Thaaros had been slowly replacing the Green Lanterns with Lanterns loyal only to him. She also reveals that the United Planets has been destroying power batteries all over the universe. Only the power battery on New Korugar is still active, but Jo suspects it will be attacked again.
Jo takes Hal to spy on Thaaros and his ring hunters attempting to investigate the Source Lantern, the power source for the U.P. Lanterns. Thaaros convinces one of his Lanterns to touch the Source Lantern, hoping to find a way to gain access to it, but the Lantern gets vaporized the moment he gets close to it. According to Jo, Thaaros has been attempting to gain access to the Source Lantern every day. Thaaros gets visited by Jessica, who serves a double agent for Jo and the resistance. Jessica Cruz informs Thaaros that a group of captured Lanterns has been taken to the Oan sciencells, just as Simon Baz tells Jo and Hal that he has found their target at the sciencells.
Hal, Jo and Simon infiltrate the sciencells, which contains dozens of captured Lanterns, including Larfleeze. Eventually, they found the person they're trying to rescue, Keli Quintela, unconscious and about to be experimented on by U.P. scientists. Hal wants to rescue her immediately, but Simon and Jo tell him to wait. Thaaros' ring hunters are equipped with staffs that can shut down rings and if they expose themselves, they'll be left vulnerable. Hal, however, refuses to leave Keli behind, so he barges into the operating room and attacks the scientists.
As Jo predicted, Thaaros' ring hunters attempt to capture Hal, but his ring is immune to the ring hunters' equipment and that gives Hal and his friends a chance to fight back. One of the U.P. scientists escapes with Keli, but Hal and his friends save Razer from his sciencell, while also taking one of the U.P. Lanterns that attacked him on Earth for interrogation.
Thaaros is informed about the events at the sciencells, so he tells Jessica to inform the Unseeing, his personal group of mages, to locate the rebellious Lanterns, even if that means weakening the barrier that isolates Sector 2814 from the rest of the universe. Jessica obeys and the Unseeing works towards finding the resistance.
