Synopsis for "Into the Green"

Hal descends into the underground caverns of Monte de Sante Trega, the place from which he felt an enormous power back when he was fighting Sinestro. Flying across a deep, dark tunnel, he finds a light at its end and when he reaches it, he discovers a vast forest, adorned with flowers and waterfalls. He explores this green paradise and encounters and old friend: Thomas Kalmaku.

As the two friends happily reunite, Tom explains to Hal how he got here. He was living happily with his family, until he had a dream. In that dream, he saw a Guardian, who told him that he had been chosen to fulfill a great purpose. Tom travelled a very long distance to reach this huge paradise, and it was only when he found it that Tom remembered his old purpose: he was the last of the New Guardians, having survived all the way to the new Millennium. When Hal and Tom reach an enormous tree at the center of the forest, Tom explains that the Green has protected this forest's secret for a very long time, until a Green Lantern could find it. A green light envelops Tom and the tree splits open to reveal its secret: an Oan Power Battery.

Amazed by this discovery, Hal attempts to recharge his ring only for the ring to vanish from his finger. Tom explains that this ring was only but a shadow of the green light's power, and Hal needs something more permanent. From the ground rises a pedestal that contains a series of Oan rings, each for a Lantern from Sector 2814. The rings and the battery were constructed by the Guardians as a way to preserve the Green Lantern Corps and prevent the green light of justice from fading. Humans, as the Guardians believe, have an "excess of will" and an innate inability to follow orders, attributes that make them perfect candidates for the Green Lantern Corps. Hal recites the oath and his ring is recharged.

With his purpose fulfilled, Tom departs from the forest while Hal takes to the skies. He can finally help his friends in confronting whatever is destroying Power Batteries across the universe, but first, he takes a moment to look at the Earth one last time before starting his mission. He thinks about Carol and decides that, for her sake, he has to let her go so she can find the happiness he could never give her.

When he tries to leave Sector 2814, however, he finds the United Planets Lanterns attempting to stop a ship from leaving the sector. They are the exact same Lanterns that captured Razer and thus, attempt to detain Hal, as well. To prevent further conflict, Hal allows himself to be captured and taken to Oa, where he can plan his next move. That decision is taken out of his hands, however, when a tank-shaped construct blasts the U.P. Lanterns. From the tank emerges Jo Mullein, who asks Hal if he needs help.

Synopsis for Jessica Cruz: "The Trial of Jessica Cruz"

Jessica Cruz has been accused of treason against the United Planets and put on trial, which is presided by Lord Premier Thaaros, who says that he could save himself the trouble of passing a sentence and instead throw her into prison and delay her trial indefinitely. Jessica insists that she has not betrayed Thaaros, but her accuser, Lantern Endicott, delivers her testimony.

She and Jessica had been assigned to a special mission: destroy the Orange Power Battery. When Endicott planted the bomb on the battery, however, Jessica contained the explosion, an action that proves her treachery. Jessica defends herself and claims that Endicott had made a mistake. She had placed the bomb in a wrong location and had the bomb detonated, it would have caused an emotional contamination. A Lantern squad later returned to destroy the battery and capture Larfleeze.

Before the trial can continue, Jessica notices a Green Lantern about to assassinate Thaaros using a sniper rifle and she deflects the shot. Thaaros orders his Lanterns to capture the assassin while summoning Jessica to his side and she takes this opportunity to swear allegiance to him. Pleased, Thaaros promotes her to his Lantern Council.

This was a trick, however, to get into Thaaros' good side and spy on him on behalf of the Green Lantern Corps. In the locker room, Jessica communicates with Jo Mullein and says that her mission to infiltrate Thaaros' council is a success.
