Gregory Sanders, also known as the Vigilante, was a former member of the Seven Soldiers of Victory and a vigilant vigilante who operated in the American Old West, the mid-20th Century, and the early 21st Century.

Sanders parted with his father, sheriff of a small town in Wyoming, on bad terms to pursue a career as a singer in New York City, only days before his father was murdered. Returning to his hometown, he brought those responsible to justice and dedicated himself to fighting crime across the United States of America as the Vigilante with his sidekick Stuff, the Chinatown Kid.[1] Toting two six shooters and a motorcycle, Vigilante combated mobsters and Nazis, gaining a reputation in Opal City.[2]

In the Golden Age of superheroes, Vigilante became a founding member of the Seven Soldiers of Victory, alongside other heroes like the Crimson Avenger, the Star-Spangled Kid and Stripesy, the Shining Knight, and the time-displaced duo of Green Arrow and Speedy. With his team, the Vigilante faced villains such as the Iron Hand and Black Star.[1]

Vigilante was eventually contacted by the immortal criminal-at-the-time the Shade in 1944 in order to request his assistance to rescue his great-grandson Darnell Caldecott from Nazi spies. Vigilante agreed, in exchange for intel on the local gangs. After the rescue was successful, Sanders and the Shade parted ways.[2] The Vigilante was for a time transported into the American West of the past, working as a bounty hunter and delivering criminals to Belle Reve penitentiary.[3] In battle with a being called Nebula Man, the Seven Soldiers of Victory were thrown forward in time to the modern age of superheroes. The team split up, and Vigilante retired to a ranch.[1]

He joined other heroes living and undead in battle against the One Who Laughs,[4] and was also a member of a contemporary version of the Seven Soldiers, who gathered in California to investigate the disappearance of the original Crimson Avenger and defeat the time-manipulating villain the Clock King.[1] In memory of the Avenger's sidekick Wing, who had died in battle with Nebula Man, the Vigilante and other Soldiers agreed to assemble whenever they were needed.[5]
