Gregory was a fully grown gargoyle and the pet of Cain.

Gregory was once a Nightmare, but in the time between Morpheus's imprisonment and escape, had grown docile and friendly, becoming the loved pet of Cain and Abel. However, in order to commune with The Three, Morpheus required sand from one of his creations, and Gregory was chosen, which would result in his death. Cain and Abel protested, but eventually yielded, with Gregory himself willing to give his life for The Dreaming.[1]
