We have met the enemy and they are dead. And knowing the Teen Titans are gone makes me feel warm all over.
- — H.I.V.E. Mistress src
The H.I.V.E. Mistress was the former leader of H.I.V.E., who murdered her husband and took control of the organization.
History
The woman known only as the H.I.V.E. Mistress began as the spouse of the H.I.V.E. Master, the original founder of the H.I.V.E. organization. Mild-mannered and sentimental by temperament, she was driven to pathological insecurity by her tendency to compare all her own actions against the example set by her husband and expressed a longing for his continued guidance. The H.I.V.E. Master may have contributed to this mentality in part, as the Mistress alleged that he accused her of indecisiveness. In spite of her seeming emotional dependency on the Master, the Mistress killed him at an indeterminate point to usurp control over the H.I.V.E. organization. From there, she supervised an operation to exterminate Atlantis using chemical weapons that would make the water unbreathable to Atlantean-kind. A test detonation of one of these weapons nearly killed Aqualad and Aquagirl, but the Atlantean heroes returned for the H.I.V.E.'s undersea base with the New Teen Titans to disarm the rest of the torpedoes. Not altogether without scruples, the Mistress relented from attacking the vulnerable Titans after they narrowly survived a sprung deathtrap, insisting that they deserved to make the next move, and while not above sacrificing her own men, she ensured that their families benefited from generous life insurance policies. Nevertheless, her questionable tactical decisions allowed the Titans to overrun her whole base, which the Mistress dealt with by committing murder-suicide with the Council of Seven and setting the base to self-destruct. In a prerecorded message left behind for the Titans to find, the Mistress commented on the irony that the H.I.V.E. was formed with the expectation of clashing with the Justice League, only to end up being unraveled by the younger generation of crimefighters.[1]
