Hal Jordan, also known as the Green Lantern, is a knight and a member of the Order of the Emerald Lantern.
History
Harold "Hal" Jordan's parents were killed when the Shadow League allowed the forces of "the Black" to enter his world. Sir Alan Scott of the Order of the Emerald Lantern came to Hal's rescue and helped beat the Black back, later raising Hal under his care. Hal succeeded in becoming a member of Scott's order under his guidance and eventually became its most distinguished knight, though fellow members feared about his great hatred for the Black.[1]
When his world by assaulted by an army of mysterious drones, Hal used more power of his Magic Lantern than he ever had to stop them. The Harbinger arrived soon after he was successful, playing him the message of the Monitor Nix Uotan, about the Multiverse consisting of multiple universes being in peril. Hal agreed to become the Monitor's champion in order to fight the coming multiversal crisis.[2]
Battling the Two-Face
After the Two-Face of Earth-17 killed Harbinger and stole the Eternal Key, Catwoman of Earth-19 decided to call Harbinger's other recruits as she viewed the newest one, the Batman of Earth-0, as unimpressive. These recruits included Harold; Wonder Woman of Earth-17; and Robin of Earth-43.[3]
Hal however believed in Batman, who disliked his pompous way of talking, but trusted him because he was a counterpart of his universe's Hal Jordan. Lantern introduced the other heroes to Batman, but Robin and Wonder Woman didn't trust his abilities. After gaining the trust of others, Batman agreed with Robin's plan to chase Two-Face and had Catwoman take them to Earth-48, where he had gone. After arriving on the world, they were hit by a strong gust. Hal tried protecting Catwoman with a fort constructed from his Magic Lantern, but it soon collapsed. Batman realized it was useless since the Two-Face had started Earth-48's destruction.[4]
Hal however saved all his allies by encasing them in a bubble made from his Magic Lantern, and transported them into the Bleed. As the effort started draining him, he focused on the memory of him battling the drones and Harbinger recruiting him, in order to gain strength. The Monitor arrived in time to save them, and asked Hal to take the heroes to Earth-17 in order to distract Two-Face, while he prepared weapons to take him down.[2] Upon waking up however, Robin and Catwoman criticized Hal for agreeing. Batman told the heroes to stop bickering and stated they'll be going after him, no matter what. They were soon ambushed by the wastelanders called "Mutie Boys", led by Earth-17's Bane.[5]
Bane tried killing Catwoman when she tried to flee, causing Batman to intervene. Hal told the others to go help him, while he dealt with all the wastelanders alone. The effort exhausted his power, but he was able to knock all the wastelanders out. When he told Batman he was useless now, the latter stated that Hal Jordan could never be useless. later using a ruse to fool their enemies into thinking that they will be killed by Hal, if they didn't do as they said. Hal agreed to go along with his lie, while Bane and his Mutie Boys agreed to take them to Two-Face's hideout in the Wayne Manor.[6]
As Two-Face tried killing Robin, Batman ordered the heroes to attack, but found himself outmatched due to the power Two-Face had absorbed. As Two-Face overpowered the heroes, Hal used the last bit of his Magic Lantern's energy to protect his allies, before falling unconscious. Bane upon seeing this order his men to attack, but Catwoman succeeded in defeating Two-Face by absorbing power from Eternal Key, while Wonder Woman held the others off. The Monitor soon arrived and took the Eternal Key into his custody. He requested the heroes to continue fighting by his side, but warned the threats they'll face in future will be even greater.[7]
Fight for Nil
Hal later arrived with his allies on Earth-13, after its heroes: Zatanna, the Lord Zod and Supergirl; the Mecha Superman of Earth-44 and Justice League members from Earth-0: Zatanna, the Flash and Cyborg; had beaten back the mysterious foe who was assaulting the world.[8] The teams joined forces to plan against the crisis and Hal informed Supergirl, another member of the Monitor's army, that Harbinger had died. He along with others agreed to go after their enemy, but they were soon interrupted by the arrival of a mysterious man, who was the Lex Luthor of Earth-19.[9]
Lex tried to make the heroes believe the could trust him and asked Selina to vouch for him, but she stated that he was in actual a ruthless power-hungry industrialist. Hal and Zod requested Batman to trust him, since he was an expert of technology. Batman agreed but asked the others to keep an eye on Lex. Hal then took them to the Vault of the Diurnal Sphere where they could plan. Upon seeing that all the Titans of Earth-13 had been released in other universes, Lex helped the heroes realize that their enemy was going to assault Nil, the Monitor's homeworld, and they rushed to get there in time.[10]
While Hal battled Metallos of Earth-43 on Nil along with his allies, Batman had a team consisting of Catwoman, Wonder Woman, Luthor, the Flash, and Supergirl, transported away from the battlefield to conduct reconnaissance.[11] The Metallos soon withdrew after Mecha Superman went berserk due to hearing their name. Hal recognized his outburst was due to something that personally bothered him and Batman calmed him down.[12] Batman and his team soon came to the rescue of Lex, Catwoman and Supergirl outside the Axis Tower, when they were being overpowered by the Metallos led by Brainiac of Earth-43.[13]
Batman decided to use the Monitor technology against Brainiac's forces, telling Hal to hold the fort while he went into the Axis Tower, and also told Lex to come with him[13] Hal successfully held off the Metallo with his allies, while Zatanna was taken by the Flash to insulate the Eternal Key and allow Nil's defense system to be reactivated. The heroes sought shelter and marveled at the path of destruction Nil's destruction carved among Brainiac's forces. The Monitor then sent the heroes back to their universes, in order to recruit new allies and keep an eye out for ant threats.[14]
The Earth Engine
After Wonder Woman of Earth-17 discovered a strange device on her world, she sent out a call to Batman, Catwoman, Green Lantern and Robin for assistance.[15] Upon interrogating Killer Croc who had been guarding the device, they learnt that it was called "Earth Engine" and a bespectacled man with a strange accent had told him to guard it.[16] Selina suspected Lex, since she had seen the designs in his plans. This caused Batman and the newly-recruited Superman of Earth-0 to go after him.[17]
Hal meanwhile was sent to find any Earth Engines in the multiverse. As he arrived in Earth-44, Mecha Superman took him for a threat due to his sudden unannounced appearance, but quickly stood down upon seeing it was him. Hal showed him the Earth Engine the other heroes had found, and Mecha Superman performed an energy profile scan. Upon discovering an Earth engine in Metropolis' power core, Mecha Superman had him accompany till there, The two were however soon ambushed by Earth-44's Deathstroke, who overpowered Hal by using the color yellow.[18]
After the Hawkgirl of Earth-19 helped Batman an Superman defeat Luthor, Catoman convinced her to join them. Lex however was able to prove his innocence, showing that he was only building small-scaled suggestion devices capable of altering thoughts of people. After Batman told Catwoman to tell their allies to come to Earth-19, she found that Green Lantern was not responding.[17] As Mecha Superman fought Deathstroke on Earth-44, Hal recovered his consciousness and interrupted the fight. Trapping Deathstroke with his Lantern's power, Hal told Mecha Superman that they should work together, so he couldn't figure out a counter. Mecha Superman did as he asked, resulting in him being destroyed.[19]
After Batman and Superman of Earth-0 arrived on Earth-44, they were shown the Earth Engine Hal and Mecha Superman had found. The heroes went back to Earth-19 to plan, and Batman decided to split everyone up into teams so they could find Earth Engines in various universes. Hal was sent to Earth-0 along with Superman of that world and Wonder Woman of Earth-17. Upon arriving in Keystone City, they found an Earth Engine in its under-construction supermall.[19]
Upon learning that Batman's team had found an Earth Engine on Earth-43 as well, the heroes guessed that someone was trying to create a mind-controlled army to battle the Monitor. Hal suggested that they inform the Monitor, and Batman agreed. Upon going to the basement of Lex's Metroplis headquarters, to see what he had learnt about the Earth Engine found there, Lex told them that it had been rigged to drive people mad and make them kill themselves if tampered with.[20]
The Monitor was summoned to Earth-19 by Wonder Woman and upon learning about the Earth Engine, decided to disable it despite Lex's warnings. This however created an energy wave which started overpowering everyone's mind. Hal tried to shield the Earth Engine to negate its effect, but struggled to contain its power. The Monitor however had suffered the greatest effect and was driven mad.[21] As the heroes struggled to subdue Uotan, Batman told Hal to surround the heroes in his force field instead, stating they had no choice even if it drove the world mad. Hal agreed and this method was more successful, but it didn't calm the Monitor. Batman then told Catwoman of Earth-19 to call every hero they knew, telling them to come to Earth-19 to assist them.[22]
Catwoman did as Batman asked and the other heroes soon showed up, with the magic users, Zatanna of Earth-0, Supergirl of Earth-13, and Zatanna of Earth-13 calming the Monitor down temporarily. Hal encased the new arrivals in his force field, upon being told by Batman. The Monitor then had Superman of Earth-0 and Mecha Superman throw the Earth Engine into the Bleed.[23] Upon noticing that Lex was missing, Batman had the heroes split up to search for him.[24]
The heroes soon found that Vandal Savage of Earth-19 had been behind the Earth Engines and defeated him. Savage was taken to Nil to be imprisoned. After disabling the Earth Engines across the multiverse, Hal went with Superman of Earth-0 and Wonder Woman of Earth-17 to Nil, to inform the Monitor about the completion of the task. Knowing that another wave of the Infinite Crisis will come soon, Hal stated that they needed to recruit allies quicker.[25]
Infinite Crisis
As the most powerful wave of Infinite Crisis struck, realities were torn asunder and cast adrift into the Bleed. This resulted in Gotham of Earth-19 and Gotham of Earth-0, which were adrift in the Bleed, to be merged together. Green Lantern joined other champions to fight back against the new threat endangering the multiverse.[1]
