You don't think that I can beat Hardware because he's physically stronger. But I can beat him. With my intellect. If he's anything like You, it'll take all of five minutes!

Hardware #9 is an issue of the series Hardware (Volume 1) with a cover date of November, 1993.

Synopsis for "Software!"

The issue opens in Edwin Alva’s office, where he’s showing Curt Metcalf footage of Hardware disrupting one of Alva’s smuggling operations. He asks Curt to head a project to build armor that could defeat Hardware, and assigns Tiffany Evans to work with him.

Curt sabotages their efforts in “subtle” ways to slow down their progress, but Tiffany and Alva both catch on. Alva threatens to sue him for breach of contract if he doesn’t start producing better results.

Curt later comes into Alva’s office with a proposal for a robot that could overcome Hardware through brute force, but Tiffany points out that this is the sort of thing Hardware would be expecting. She suggests building their own armor, and that she should be the one to pilot it.

Curt, not wanting to have to harm Tiffany, suggests to her that this isn’t a job for “a girl”. She’s offended at not being called treated like a grown woman, and storms off.

Alva later hosts a small party for the unveiling of Tiffany in the completed armor. She asks to be called “Technique”.

Knowing that it’s a trap, Hardware still decides to intercept a shipment Alva is getting flown in from Columbia, He’s surprised to only see one crate being moved, and assumes something valuable must be inside.

Upon opening it, Technique emerges and a fight ensues. Curt holds back at first, still not wanting to hurt her, but eventually gets the upper hand.

While she’s down, he plugs his suit into her armor to learn what tricks she’s hiding. He ends up downloading a virus that causes his jet pack to launch him straight upwards until he starts to fall back to the ground. He has to use a manual override to soften his landing, but still sustains serious injuries.

The issue concludes with Tiffany reading a letter of apology from Curt, which mentions that he’ll be home sick for a week or two.
