Hawkman (Volume 4) #4 is an issue of the series Hawkman (Volume 4) with a cover date of August, 2002. It was published on June 5, 2002.
Synopsis for "Beasts of Burden"
Hawkman is imprisoned inside the Battlelands, another dimension created by the God Shiva for his children. Here, two tribes live: the Makhna, resembling Shiva himself, and the Komeriah, who share the traits of the god Ganesha. The Makhna enslaved the Komeriah, treating them like inferior beings, and captured Hawkman because he wanted to stop the slavery. Imprisoned together with Shadow Thief, Carter also knows that Jayita is held as hostage by the Makhna tribe chief, Fahir. Soon, Hawkman finds a way to free himself up, and also frees Sands and Aalok, the imprisoned leader of the Komeriah tribe, who previously attacked them thinking them part of their rival tribe.
Aalok tells Carter he appreciates what he's trying to do, and tells him he's sorry about exchanging him for an enemy before. He also reveals him he wanted to be captured: inside the mine they are working, they can attack the pillars sustaining the weight of the entire city and start a rebellion, as Aalok's troops are waiting, hidden, outside Om's walls. Hawkman then proceeds with the plan and rescues Jayita, while Shadow Thief rescues his teammate Copperhead.
Meanwhile, Hawkgirl and Daniel were able to escape from the Indian military and they also took back the Third Eye of Shiva from Tigress. While doing this, Kendra asked Daniel about the telegram he sent to her parents before they were murdered, suggesting them to stay away from St. Roch as it could turn out dangerous. But Mr. Evans tells her he never sent any telegram to her parents, and that they will look into the matter after they resolve their current situation. Getting back to the temple, Daniel is able to summon the powers of the Third Eye of Shiva, opening a portal to the Battlelands to let Hawkman, Jayita and the others come back. As Carter would like to stay to help Aalok with his rebellion, he is thanked by the leader of the Komeriah, who also tells him he must go: the Komeriah must win this fight by themselves to gain respect.
With Tigress, Copperhead and Shadow Thief escaped, Hawkman and Hawkgirl come back with Daniel. In St. Roch, Mr. Roderic tells his three henchmen that they will get back the Third Eye of Shiva, as it is an object of power. While talking to his men, Roderic hears a screaming voice in his head, telling him to kill the hawks. In St. Roch there's also another mystery: people are killed by arrows. In the night, a man resembling Green Arrow jumps from roof to roof.
