Synopsis for "Talons"

Commissioner Emmett feels that Katar and Shayera have been holding out on him in regards to vital information. Shayera denies Emmett's accusations and Emmett tells Shayera that she is banned from any further involvement for the investigations relating to the murder of his two top officers. Shayera angrily asks for an explanation and Darl explains that any officer who had a private or intimate relationship with another fellow officer who was killed must refrain from getting involved because their emotions might jeopardize the investigation. Katar interjects on Shayera's behalf and says that Shayera will obey Emmett's order.

Shayera storms out of Emmett's office and brings up Katar's journal in front of Darl. The two of them get into another heated argument in the hallway but Shayera chooses to fly off and find Byth. When she reaches the doors, Shayera is bombard by news reporters who were waiting outside of the precinct for comments. One reporter named Howard Baxter-Foote makes a scathing remark about her relationship with Jones and she responds by sucker punching him in the face.

As for Katar, he debriefs Emmett about his history with Byth on Thanagar and his personal grudge against his former commander. Darl assigns Katar and Shayera a lawyer named Grant Pauley who joins in during the debrief. Emmett can't understand why Byth would kill two of his officers if he has personal vendetta against Katar and Shayera. If Byth can shapeshift, he could have killed Katar and Shayera at anytime without them realizing it until it was too late. Katar believes there is a method to Byth's violent tendencies. Katar tells Emmett that he will do his utmost to bring in Byth alive in order to face justice but Emmett isn't opposed to the idea if Byth was killed. Pauley informs Katar that even criminals must be allowed due process in a court of law and he shouldn't take the commissioner's comment to heart.

Meanwhile, Byth transforms into a giant hawk like creature and causes an oil tanker to crash into the LaSalle Street Bridge on the Wacker Street side. The collision causes the tanker to catch fire. WNUA news reporter Charlie Meyerson captures the entire event from his helicopter. Byth notices the helicopter and attacks it. The helicopter and its occupants crash onto the LaSalle Street Bridge. The fiery wreckage falls onto a band of police cars stationed on the bridge. Shayera charges in from the sky and shoots at Byth with her assault rifle but Byth dodges her gunfire. Byth mocks Shayera's marksmanship because she is letting her anger get the better of her.

Emmett tells Shayera to stand down but she ignores him. Darl tells Katar to apprehend Shayera before she destroys whatever diplomatic credibility that he has left with Earth's authorities. Shayera manages to wound Byth by shooting one of his wings. Byth falls onto a rooftop and Shayera takes aim. Just as she was about to deliver a head shot, Katar gets in the middle of Shayera's line of fire. Katar tries to talk some sense into Shayera just she did with him when he had the chance to kill Byth back on Thanagar. Byth heals from his wound and tries to make an escape. Emmett tells his men to open fire and shoot down Byth. Shayera shoves Katar out of the way because she doesn't want Emmett's officers to rob her of her revenge. Shayera shoots Byth in the chest and Katar knocks out Shayera. Katar delivers an unconscious Shayera to Emmett's custody in order to restore and maintain diplomatic ties between Earth and Thanagar.
