The Sovereign (real name Henry Charles) is the secret King of the United States of America and an enemy to Wonder Woman.
History
The man who would be known as the hidden monarch of America originated as Henry Charles, one whom hails from an infamous familial cadre of taciturn schemers who used a powerful mystical lariat to suborn the founding fathers of a burgeoning U.S. capital state 300yrs ago.
For more than a few centuries, Charle's and his family had ruled the greater states in secret while privately sponging off the livelihood of its denizens to make a more than lucrative profit off of an entire nation's ignorance to their existence and ruling status. But this prepotency would reach a turning point when Henry was overlooked as the successor to the patrilineal throne for his female sibling.[1]
Enraged at his father choosing his own sister, a woman over him no less, drove Mr. Charles over the edge. Ranting and raving at the parent whom he'd disappointed once too often with his own actions about how it was a lie that a matron should ever supersede their masculine counterpart. Bellowing aloud how such a decision would disrupt the delicate structure that took centuries for such a dynasty to be built if he went through with it.
Before anything could be finalized, Henry killed his hierarchical patron and usurped the monarchy by using their family treasure; the Lasso of Lies, to cement his dominance over a household remade in his image. His estranged sister disappearing into the night shortly afterwards.
World War Wonder
After spending decades of hoarding and enriching illicitly acquired wealth for his own personal luxuries,[2] hearing tell of a newly revealed hidden nation of warrior women now making their way in the nation his family had built would enflame The Sovereign's misogyny. The very idea of this clan of the mystical weaker sex moving into his kingdom, particularly, the very presence of such a storied apex female who stands as their champion and global icon; Wonder Woman. Was more than what his fragile ego would enable him to bear.[3]

- Sovereign was created by Tom King and Daniel Sampere, first appearing in Wonder Woman #800. However, in the Prime Earth continuity, Sovereign first appeared as part of the New 52 DC Universe in Wonder Woman (Volume 6) #1 by Tom King and Daniel Sampere.
