General Herman von Ezel src

Herman von Ezel was a German officer and enemy of the Blackhawk Squadron.

In 1941, in the Drina River Valley of Jugoslavia, ten thousand German infantrymen were maneuvered into a canyon downstream from a dam, by the famous Blackhawk Squadron, who then blew up the dam. Their commanding officer, General Herman von Ezel was elsewhere at that moment, at his Regional Headquarters in the Balkan Mountains, and thus survived for the time being. But before the day was out, von Ezel and his adjutant were also lost in action, blocked inside a cave by an avalanche. General von Ezel swore to have revenge for his ten thousand lost men. He established his occupation headquarters in an old local castle.

That rockslide was started by one badly wounded Blackhawk pilot, Andre who also fell into the avalanche, and was apparently killed. But he survived, albeit with a gruesomely ruined face, and he took up residence in that same old castle. He found a number of secret doors and passages in the old fortress, which somehow the occupying troops never found, and wearing an elaborate, head-covering, iron mask, made life miserable for General von Ezel and his staff for several months.

Six months later, the Blackhawk Squadron returned to that area, and invaded von Ezel's medieval headquarters, much of which had been rebuilt with elaborate mechanical traps. When Blackhawk himself was captured, von Ezel had him flogged with a bullwhip. And when the troublesome "Iron Face" was captured, von Ezel personally worked him over by battering on his iron helmet with a hammer. In a rapid series of fights and rescues, the Blackhawks rescued the prisoners and gained control of the castle. Iron Face personally head-butted von Ezel into an open hatch, thru which he fell into a death cell filled with water and water snakes.
