Hippolyta is the queen of the Amazons and birth mother of Wonder Woman.
History
Diana was taken from Hippolyta as a baby by the Gods, as punishment for a transgression the Amazons had committed. Hippolyta believed that her daughter was dead, but she had in fact been taken to Hell, where she was adopted and raised by Hippolyta's old enemy Circe. Themyscira was sealed off and hidden from the world.[1]
Decades later Io, an Amazon that had been long ago thought lost in battle, suddenly appeared on Themyscira and told Hippolyta that Diana was alive. Hippolyta was overjoyed and the entire island celebrated to learn that their princess lived.[2]
