Hippolyta is the queen of the Amazons of Themyscira and Princess Diana's mother.

Long ago, the men of the old world were jealous of the Amazons' skill, so the King of Mycenae, Eurystheus, entreated Herakles, Son of Zeus, to conquer them and steal the Golden Girdle of their queen. The Amazons fought hard, but were exhausted and outnumbered.

Zeus looked down from the heavens at the battle and was impressed by Hippolyta's strength and beauty, but Hera, his wife, overheard his adulterous plan and was furious and disgusted by his arrogance.

So Hera conspired with her brother Poseidon and gave Queen Hippolyta the means to escape her husband's grasp, and during the battle against Herakles and his men, the Amazons rushed aboard Poseidon's vessel. To delay Herakles and Zeus (who was disguised as one of Herakles' men), Hippolyta threw her girdle at them and managed to escape with her surviving sisters.

The enchanted ship sailed over treacherous and uncharted waters until one day, it reached a secret island, the paradise island of Themyscira.

Weary of battle and thankful for their new home, the Amazons enjoyed a new and peaceful life. But even though her sisters were happy and safe, Hippolyta's heart was not full. She had a dream yet unfulfilled. She wanted a child.

Princess Diana was born from the sands shaped by her mother Queen Hippolyta on a beach in Themyscira. Hippolyta sang while giving her forms, and the Amazons of the island joined her in the song. The music reached the ears of the Gods of Olympus, who then wept with emotion and their silver and gold tears falling on the sand of the island gave life to Diana as well as her divine powers.

The only child born on the island, Diana grew spoiled by all the Amazons, becoming a vain and self-centered girl, always provoking the other women with her pranks. Anyway, Hipolita was quite indulgent with her daughter and Diana grew up without bounds.

Time passed, and the Amazons prepared for the Commemoration of Warriors. By competing in games of physical skill and arts of war, they remembered the battles they fought and how grateful they were to have peace. During the games, however, Diana's actions — obsessed with conquering Alethea's heart — went so far as to cause a terrible tragedy against her Amazon sisters, even costing Alethea herself, who fought bravely to counter the danger invoked by Diana. Only after Alethea's death, Diana understood Alethea's heart and that it was she, not the princess, a true Amazon.

Because of the tragedy and her beloved's death, Diana was judged and condemned by Queen Hippolyta to exile in the modern Man's World, and should return only when she have made up for the ills she have caused.[1]

  • Immortality: The Amazons were gifted immortality by the Gods. The people of Themyscira lived forever while on the island, though could be killed in battle or in an accident.[1]
  • Superhuman Strength: Rumors claimed the Amazons were five times stronger than even the strongest men.[1]
