The Horae, also called The Three Seasons, are the goddesses of the seasons and the natural portions of time.

History

Goddesses associated with the course of the seasons, they preside over the order of nature and order in general. They are daughters of Zeus, the king of the Olympian gods, and Themis, the Titan goddess of justice, and are the guardians of the gates of Mount Olympus.[1]

The meanings of their names evoke their functions: Dike (goddess of justice), Eirene (goddess of peace) and Eunomia (goddess of good order).

They also serve Hera, the queen of the gods, as her handmaidens.[2]

The Horae, along with the Graces, participated in the creation of Pandora, the first woman, created by the Gods to punish mankind, created by Prometheus, for giving them the fire stolen from Olympus. They doused the Olympic beauty with the essence of exotic perfumed oils and pumiced her skin until it shone with a creamy luminescence, and they draped her in silvery raiments and embroidered veils, and garlanded her hair with sweet-scented flowers.[3]
