- Even without Sauncha, the captain is stronger than most men! If something could knock him thirty feet, I'd like to see it!
Captain Horatio Strong discovered a strange and unique seaweed which he called "sauncha", and upon consuming it made him much stronger than normal men.
History
Initially, Strong decided to use his new found strength to help people, but the sauncha (which turned out to be of extraterrestrial origin) had the unexpected side effect of making Strong act dangerously irrational and causing severe withdrawal pains. This brought Strong into conflict with Superman before being taken to a hospital. Strong realized his addiction with sauncha and swore never to use it again. Strong later became a friend of Clark Kent and Superman while never realizing that they were the same person.

- Sauncha: Captain Strong derives his powers from eating the seaweed sauncha. Upon learning that Sauncha is an addictive substance of alien origin, Captain Strong has cut his usage of Sauncha cold-turkey, though his natural level of strength remains formidable for a non-enhanced human and his courage has not been reduced any. Captain Strong keeps a tiny sample of Sauncha (one of the last remaining samples in existence) in his houseboat purely as a test of personal moral fortitude, as he forces himself not to consume it no matter how great the urge.[3][4]
Notes
- Although this character was originally introduced during DC's Earth-One era of publication, their existence following the events of the 1985–86 limited series Crisis on Infinite Earths remains intact. However, some elements of the character's Pre-Crisis history may have been altered or removed for Post-Crisis New Earth continuity, and should be considered apocryphal.
- Horatio Strong is based on the character Popeye, the Sailor Man.
