Synopsis for "The Immortal"

Marco Polo pursues a deserter from his group who seeks the secret of immortality from the headman of a Chinese village. At first the headman tells him that he knows of no such secret, then the villagers are killed, and the headman agrees to lead the deserter to the secret. As Marco Polo draws near, the headman steps out into lava without being burned and tells the deserter that he only need do the same. The deserter thinks he has gained a better treasure than Marco Polo will ever attain, but when he steps into the lava, he screams and burns up. The headman tells the astonished witness Marco Polo that his cloak is made of asbestos.
