House of Mystery #299 is an issue of the series House of Mystery (Volume 1) with a cover date of December, 1981.
Synopsis for I... Vampire!: "Chapter Six: The Sun Also Burns"
Andrew Bennett, Deborah Dancer and Dmitri Mishkin are attacked by human agents of the Blood Red Moon during daylight. The hitmen run their car off the road to burn Bennett alive, but everyone is swallowed into darkness by a convenient earthquake. Dancer and Mishkin survive to wait for help, and Bennett nearly bites Dancer in her sleep. She wakes up to see him, and he passionately kisses her instead. When rescue services open up a slight crack, he flies back to the blood reserves in his California manor as a bat. Drinking bottled animal blood, he realizes that his bloodlust is uncontrollable and he can no longer endanger his friends. He leaves them a note on his mansion's door explaining that they can no longer accompany him. Traveling through Kansas as a hitchhiker, he is attacked again by the Blood Red Moon. They force him off the road and the driver is impaled by a tree, with his face burned beyond recognition. Bennett switches clothes with the driver to fake his own death and escapes.
