Synopsis for "House Odds"

A young gambler named Jackie Malloy runs into a losing streak at a casino when he is approached by the owner. The owner Arno Goldsmith offers Malloy the chance to win his money back by extending him a line of credit. Malloy is escorted to a private room where Goldsmith reveals that they will be gambling for Malloys youth. The gambling commences as a skeletal dealer spins the roulette wheel. As Malloy loses he becomes visibly older while Goldsmith appears to be getting younger. Malloy then realizes that he must do something desperate and begins betting on double zeros. The bet pays off and Malloy begins a winning streak. Malloy keeps winning by betting on the same number as Goldsmith starts to age once more. Goldsmith collapses as the skeletal dealer reveals that it was him that he wanted all along. The dealer picks up an infant Malloy and leaves him crying on the roulette table. He was finally a winner.

Notes

  • This cover is very misleading. Andrew Bennett does not fight an evil circus. He does visit a rather pleasant carnival, but they don't try to kill him even a little bit. Instead he fights some other totally unrelated guys.
  • "Benny's Friend" is a Christmas-themed story.
