Hugo Strange is an evil psychiatrist and the former director of the Arkham Institute.

Batman '66

Batman '66 Vol 1 1 Textless
The original TV series was continued in two different forms: comics and animated movies. This section of the history covers the events of the tie-in comics (Batman '66 (Volume 1) and several crossovers). Part of this may contradict the animated movies Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders, Batman vs. Two-Face and Knock Knock, Mr. Joker!.

According to one account of his biography, Professor Hugo was a Swiss psychiatrist who eventually became the director of the Arkham Institute for the Criminally Insane. Under his supervision, Arkham profiled and treated infamous villains like the Joker, Holly Quinn, Catwoman and Ma Parker among other patients.[3][4] It was later revealed that Doctor Hugo was secretly an evil mastermind who worked for the organization T.H.R.U.S.H. under the code name Corvid. At an undersea base, Strange eventually even tried to brainwash Batman and Robin. However, Hugo's plans ultimately failed miserably and he was taken into custody.[5][6]

Batman vs. Two-Face

In an alternate telling of his backstory, Hugo Strange was a German scientist and inventor who was employed by Warden Crichton at Gotham State Penitentiary to create a machine that was capable of extracting evil energies from criminals and rehabilitate them in the process. Batman, Robin and District Attorney Harvey Dent were present at the prison when Strange and his assistant attempted to present the capabilities of the machine by extracting the combined evil from the brains of Joker, Penguin, Riddler, Egghead and Mr. Freeze. However, the experiment ultimately failed when the machine overloaded with the enormous amount of evil energies, eventually causing the collection vat that stored the evil gas to explode. Even though Batman tried to shield the DA from the explosion with the Batsuit's cape, the substance was still sprayed directly into parts of Dent's face, severely disfiguring it on the left side and transforming him into the dangerous villain Two-Face. Following the incident, Strange was fired by the authorities and his evil extractor project was terminated. Two-Face later forced Strange to join him in his plan to secretly extract evil energy from the brains of Joker, Penguin, Riddler, Egghead, Shame, Clock King and Mr. Freeze as part of a larger scheme to infect all citizens of Gotham with evil gas. These plans was later thwarted by Batman, Robin and Two-Face's good Harvey Dent persona, which was ultimately able to overpower the evil half of his personality.[7]
