Hypnota, the Magician of the Blue Ray, is an enemy of Wonder Woman.

The stage magician "Hypnota the Great", a woman impersonating a man, was accidentally shot in the head by their identical twin assistant Serva while training for a new act. Hypnota's life was saved through experimental surgery, with the unexpected side effect of activating Hypnota's midbrain enabling the use of a "Blue Hypnotic Ray" to take over the will of any other person. Using her stage show for cover Hypnota went into the business of enslaving and exporting people to Saturn with the slaver Eviless. After the Emperor of Saturn was forced to outlaw slavery by Wonder Woman Hypnota and Eviless plotted to give the Emperor an excuse to reinstate the abduction and enslavement of humans by implicating the Saturnic government's Ambassador to Earth, Count Dendum, in illegal slavery and the United States military in a retaliatory assassination of Dendum. Dendum was rescued by Wonder Woman, and his being framed as a slaver was uncovered by the Amazon and Steve Trevor. Their investigation into the mind control the soldiers who had attacked Dendum were under led them to Hypnota.[1]

After spending some time imprisoned on Reform Island Hypnota joined seven other super criminals to escape and form Villainy, Inc., the first "supervillain" gang of its type.[2]
