Iara was a great Native Brazilian warrior who was later transformed into a mermaid-like divine being as the protector of the sacred waters.[2]

Iara's abilities and her reputation were so great they delighted her father each day, even at the cost of her two less capable brothers, who were dismissed from his affections. And in return for this paternal exclusion, the brothers bowed their heads together one night in secret and plotted their sister's murder.[2]

To the mortal folly, they underestimated her rumored skills in battle. Once approached, Iara drew out her weapons and slaughtered the two where they stood. After this grisly and unfortunate task she fled to the woods, only to be pursued by her vengeful and grieving father. Casting his love for her aside, he threw his once-loved daughter over the cliff edge to the waters below.[2]

However, death did not claim her this night. Instead, a fish's tail grew where once her legs had been. And she would remain protector of the sacred waters by luring evil men that dared to step too close to the water's edge. But not all perished under Iara's embrace. Yara Flor, her namesake and fellow warrior, had returned home to restore the balance of nature and the world of man. Recognizing a kindred spirit, Iara bestows upon her a gift with which this hero's journey can finally begin: her Golden Boleadoras.[2]
