History

It was created by the mad wizard Diabolu with his dying breath to plague mankind with its evil summons every night of the full moon. The Idol had lain dormant for centuries, until it ended up in the John R. Collins collection where its power was unlocked one night by a thief.

It was the final case of J'onn J'onzz's alter-ego, as a snake-like being made out of smoke that emerged from the Idol-Head seemed to devour Officer John Jones and his car. Though the Martian Manhunter escaped and managed to put an end to the creature, he couldn't come up with a good excuse for John Jones' survival, so he left his human identity behind to be mourned by his friends.

J'onn J'onzz would continue his hunt for the Idol-Head of Diabolu for many months, always having to fight off whatever menaces it summons during the full moons.

Finally, he finds it sitting on the beach, just as it was releasing another evil beast. J'onn pushes it back inside, also being accidentally drawn in himself. This is how he learns of the idol's origin, having been sent back in time to ancient Babylon where it was first created. Fortunately, he managed to defeat the creature attacking the city, and tricks the wizard Diabolu by assuming its form. With his final breath, Diabolu seals J'onn inside the Idol-Head. Sent back to the present day, the Martian Manhunter finally destroys the cursed idol by crushing it to pieces in his hands.
