Launched in 1991, the Impact Comics imprint made use of the Archie Comics/Red Circle line of of characters acquired by DC. This line of comics consisted of The Legend of the Shield, the Comet, Jaguar, the Fly, The Web, and The Black Hood, with all of the characters from these titles uniting in a team book called The Crusaders. Aimed at younger readers, these titles ran against the "grim & gritty" grain of many comic books of that period. The adventures of these characters took place in a separate universe. There were frequent crossovers between the titles. All of the books were canceled by 1993, after the aborted relaunch with The Crucible.
Over a decade later, alternate versions of the Impact Universe characters and concepts were introduced into the DC Universe via the Red Circle mini-series and specials.
