Synopsis for "Nil"

This story is reprinted from Infinite Crisis: Fight for the Multiverse #19 (Digital), Infinite Crisis: Fight for the Multiverse #20 (Digital) and Infinite Crisis: Fight for the Multiverse #21 (Digital).

Doctor Fate of Earth-20 observes as a Metallo from Earth-43 arrives on Nil, realizing it's going to be tough. Soon however, an army of Nightmare Mettalos arrives on the world and Fate gets panicked, before calming himself. The Metallos start advancing and state the Monitor will be well-defended, but Fate knows he made little preparation for the attack. As he attacks them with his phase-blasters, he remembers how his helm had prophesized the coming attack and he had warned the Monitor about it, but he didn't heed it. As a Metallo points its blaster at him, the Green Arrow of Earth-11 intervenes and destroys it.

While fighting the Metallos along with Green Arrow, Fate states how the Monitor didn't even believe his enemies knew of him or the Overvoid. Upon realizing it was true, the Monitor quickly gathered whatever defenses he could including Fate, Green Arrow and the Power Girl of Earth-31, who soon busts into the scene. The three fight the Nightmare Metallos, but both Arrow and Power Girl get quickly killed. A despondent Fate realizes the energy of his phase-blasters too is gone, before getting blasted through his torso.

As the Metallos advance, Batman, Mecha Superman, Nightmare Robin and Lord Zod arrive to Nil through a portal. Robin and Cyborg doubt that they can beat them back, but Zod and Batman encourage them to battle on. Robin detects that the Metallos are constructs consisting of both technological and something dark that is familiar to his home universe. Cyborg upon examining their transuranic decay profiles finds they are like that of Robin, and they must hail from Earth-43. Robin states that they seem like the original Metallo, but morphed by the darkness of his home. Zod tells them that the beings consist of both advanced technology and dark magic, which Cyborg confirms is true. Realizing they're outmatched, Batman tells Cyborg to transport the second team to their location and team three to a location safe from the battle.

As Cyborg opens the portal to the Bleed, Arcane Green Lantern, Zatannas of Earth-0 and Earth-13, as well as Mecha Superman step throgh. Batman requests their aid in fighting their foes and as Zatanna gets confused as to who they're fighting, he replies that they believe they're Metallos. Mecha Superman gets shocked upon hearing that name and states that they were nothing more something imaginary Clark conjured up. Robin believes he's stopped acting normally and asks Cyborg whether the other team reached their destination safely. Cyborg only replies that he hopes they did. The team of Flash, Gaslight Lex Luthor, Arcane Supergirl, Gaslight Catwoman and Atomic Wonder Woman soon step through a portal, but Catwoman finds it smells weird despite Harbinger's orb stating that they are on Nil.

As the Flash states he smells the residue of destruction of universes in the place, Wonder Woman tells everyone to remain alert. Lex tells the others that Cyborg has informed him about them being deliberately diverted away from the battlefield, so they can conduct reconnaissance, and Wonder Woman tells Flash to search the area. She also tells Supergirl to try finding the Monitor with her magic and Catwoman to keep an eye on Lex. Lex soon tells them that something is wrong with the multiverse, it is wounded. He replies that he knows about the multiverse from the diurnal sphere, when Catwoman asks how he knows so much about it, and states that it is doomed if Nil falls. Supergirl tells Wonder Woman she may have found the Monitor, and the Flash soon comes upon his corpse.

Mecha Superman starts wildly attacking the Metallos upon learning their name, stating that they shouldn't exist. The Arcane Green Lantern and Lord Zod realize something is wrong with him, with Zatanna of Earth-13 telling them that an old painful memory is behind his rage. Cyborg states that it may be because Superman and Metallo of their universe have a history of conflict, but Batman believes it's something entirely different. The Mecha Superman continues attacking the Metallos, stating they're only supposed to be an imaginary figure Clark dreamt up and he would never want them to be real. A thunderous smash sends them all reeling and they all withdraw after realizing they're overmatched.

Batman tries comforting Superman and asks whether the Metallo was really just an imaginary figure on his world. Superman affirms and states Clark made him up, so he could learn to be the hero "Superman". Batman realizes he never thought that they could be real and states he thinks everything may be real somewhere in the multiverse. Upon learning that Clark is already dead, he tells Superman that he would be proud of him. Superman states he hopes he would, and upon confirming that the battle is not finished, tells him that they should prepare to face their foe again. Cyborg then informs that the other team has seemingly found the Monitor's corpse. Arcane Supergirl states that the Monitor cannot be dead and she detected someone else, though the body is of the real one.

Kara points her team to where she detected the Monitor, before Lex informs them about Batman's message instructing them to continue exploring, and warning them about the dangerous soldiers their enemy is deploying. Despite the turn of events, Wonder Woman states that they can't turn back, and they soon arrive at the Axis Tower, the center of Nil. Entering it, they find another corpse of the monitor, before Wonder Woman and Flash decide to explore the insides alone. As Lex waits outside with others, he detects a storm and warns Catwoman. Arriving in the room containing the multiverse, Barry wonders whether they're late. A mysterious figure however reveals himself and they become surprised upon seeing him.

Outside the Axis Tower, Supergirl discovers that the storm is not natural, and Lex reveals that he believes it is an atmospheric disruption being caused by their enemy opening a bigger portal to transport his forces towards Nil. Lex tells Supergirl and Catwoman to get ready, but they soon get hit by a strong gust. They soon get dumbfounded at the size of the army stepping through the portal and view a monstrous being, who Lex recognizes as Brainiac.
