Isolde was a princess in the time of King Arthur who had a tragic romance with Sir Tristan. In the 30th Century she was reincarnated as a political aide named Claire Locklyn.

Isolde and Tristan loved each other, but they could not be together as she was betrothed to wed another man. However, they were able to have one night together in a room in Lancelot's castle overlooking a rose garden.

Over two thousand years later Isolde was reborn as Claire Locklyn and grew up to work in politics. When aliens invaded Earth, King Arthur awoke from his magic slumber and publicly announced to the world that he would save them from the invaders; drawing Excalibur from the stone on the floor of the United Nations Building. The Knights of the Round Table, including Tristan, had also been reincarnated and their memories of the previous lives were restored, but Isolde's were not.

Claire applied to be the assistant to Jordan Matthew, the United Nations Security Director, and to her surprise was offered the job after only a perfunctory interview. Unbeknownst to her, Matthew had been instructed to hire her by Morgan LeFay, Arthur's half-sister and enemy. Claire attended the wedding between Arthur and Commander Joan Action, the reincarnated Guinevere, with Matthew. The wedding was attacked by a mutant soldier named Owen McAllister, but the knights were able to fight him off. Morgan returned Isolde's memories to her and she recognised one of the knights as Tristan, reincarnated in a female body. She ran up and told him who she was.

The rest of the knights returned to their base, but Tristan went with Isolde to her apartment and the two spent the night talking. Isolde wanted to resume their love, as she was free to follow her heart in this new life; but Tristan refused. He believed he could not be with Isolde as long as he had a woman's body, although Isolde did not care if he was a man or a woman. This was part of Morgan's scheme to manipulate Tristan into betraying Arthur by promising to transform him back into a man, and although Tristan was sorely tempted he eventually decided not to, and that he would instead force Morgan to change his body to male.

Matthew's behaviour became increasingly strange as he would lock himself in his office for hours and refuse to see anyone, even her, and had a mysterious case brought to him by U.N. soldiers. Four high-profile world leaders were assassinated and the Knights of the Round Table stole the only rocket on Earth and blasted to the edges of the solar system, but Matthew simply disappeared without warning, leaving Isolde in charge. King Arthur was blamed for the murders and Isolde discovered that Matthew had anti-Arthur propaganda posters ready to go. Realising Matthew was up to something Isolde forced her way into his empty office and found an impression of the Seal of LeFay on a pad, proving that he was in league with her. Isolde sent a message to the Knights' rocket, warning them, but the message was intercepted and destroyed by Tom Prentice, who was in love with Tristan's female form and jealous of Isolde.

The Knights were able to defeat LeFay, the aliens and Matthew, who was revealed to be the reincarnation of Modred; but only when Arthur sacrificed himself to create a nuclear explosion on the alien's homeworld. The surviving knights returned to Earth and Tristan told Tom that he had chosen to go with Isolde. Tristan intended to do this simply to let the young man down easily and allow him to get on with his life, but Isolde was still determined to once again share the love they once had. She took Tristan back to her home and showed him that she had filled her bedroom with roses, like the ones in France all those centuries ago. Tristan finally accepted that Isolde's love transcended his physical form and they made love, resuming their relationship.
