Ivan Chung (Earth-Four)

Ivan Chung was a recurring foe to Sarge Steel.

Chung originally encountered Steel during the Vietnam War. Steel captured Chung but Chung's men helped him escape and threw the grenade that cost Steel his left hand. Chung later turned up in New York City and kidnapped a Vietnamese man who came to sell expensive pearls. The man's daughter sought out Steel, who shut down Chung's operation.[1] Chung later returned to kidnap a scientist working on nuclear launchers. Chung's partner and Steel's love interest, Li-Li Black, convinced Steel to involve himself and Chung was once more thwarted, though at the expense of Li-Li's life.[2] Chung returned one more time, as a pawn of Mr. Ize. Ize mind controlled Chung and several other criminals in an attempt to kill Sarge Steel and take over the world. Steel was able to overcome Mr. Ize's mind control googles. Free from Ize's sway, Chung and the other villains fled.[3]

  • Ivan Chung is the first interracial (Chinese father, Russian mother) villain to appear in Silver Age comics.
  • This version of Ivan Chung, including all history and corresponding appearances, was erased from existence following the collapse of the original Multiverse in the 1985–86 Crisis on Infinite Earths event and later restored following the rebirth of the infinite Multiverse during the Dark Crisis of 2022–2023. Even though other versions of the character may have appeared, this information does not apply to those versions.
