Quote1 You address me by my name sir. For this you have my gratitude. It's rare this demon meets an angel with undogmatic attitude. Quote2

Synopsis for "Someone to Watch Over Me"

Shannon Coyne walks through the streets of San Francisco, and she stops to give a homeless man money. Thinking that this will give her some good karma, she finds that she was quite mistaken when she has nothing but bad luck all the way home, from getting splashed by puddles from cars, to the heels of her shoes breaking. She finally gets home, where washes her clothes, and feeds her cats in her apartment. After calling her mom, she settles down and begins reading a book. She hears a noise, and goes to check it out. She opens the door, and becomes greatly frightened at the source of the noise, Zauriel, and she kneels before him in holy terror.

In Heaven, not too long ago, Zauriel is berated by another angel for his choice to leave the Eagle-Host of guardian angels. Zauriel meets with the Four King-Angels of the Pax Dei, and though they don't approve of his decision to leave because he loves a mortal woman, Shannon Coyne, they allow him to make his own choices.

Zauriel relates all this to Shannon, and he also tells her about how he overheard Asmodel's plans to overthrow the Presence. Shannon struggles to understand what her part in all this is, and she asks where Asmodel is now. Zauriel explains how Asmodel came after him with a group of Bull-Angels intent on killing Zauriel because he was aware of Asmodel's treacherous plans. The Justice League intervened, and Superman battled Asmodel to a standstill while the others devised a plan to exorcise Asmodel, and how he wouldn't be alive if the League hadn't stopped Asmodel. He tells her about how much responsibility he has when he's with the angels in Heaven, and how he's given up everything just to be with her now, and that he lovers her. She stands and thanks him, quickly turning a picture of her and her boyfriend Jerry facedown on the table.

In Hell, Asmodel conspires with Neron, and the two agree to launch their two-pronged attack on the shores of Heaven soon. Neon asks if Zauriel will alert the Presence to the impending attack, but Asmodel scoffs at this. Asmodel asks Neron to send Etrigan after Zauriel punish him, and Neron agrees, saying that he's already taken the liberty. In her apartment, Shannon explains that Zauriel probably already knows that she's already been seeing someone, and they've been pretty serious. Zauriel is interrupted while replying, and he tells her to step away from the window. Etrigan suddenly crashes through the wall.

The demon introduces himself, and he blasts hellfire at the angel. The angel blocks it with a table, but doesn't block Etrigan's fist as easily, and the demon pastes him across the face. Shannon angrily smashes a vase over Etrigan's head, screaming at him to leave Zauriel alone. Etrigan asks if Shannon realizes how easily he could kill her, but Zauriel knocks him through the wall of the apartment, and out into the city. He tells Shannon to get as far away from Etrigan as possible, and he also says that this kind of thing is his specialty. Zauriel flies through the city searching for Etrigan, who jumps on his back from behind. The two crash into a church, and Etrigan tries to talk to Zauriel. In the Watchtower, Martian Manhunter detects a hull breach, and he is approached by a young boy, who claims to be Asmodel. Asmodel attacks J'onn, using fire against him. After pulping J'onn, he flies off, saying that this is between him and Zauriel.
