JLA #53 is an issue of the series JLA (Volume 1) with a cover date of June, 2001.
Synopsis for "It Takes a Thief"
The Id continues granting wishes: turning a desert into a lush grassland and freeing a man on death row. The Justice Leaguers who have secret identities are drifting apart as their superhero and civilian identities diverge with wildly different lifestyles and values.
In the Justice League Watchtower, the superheroes meet with the Cathexis who explain how they created Id to reshape reality. Aquaman and Wonder Woman become concerned by their teammates.
"Eel" O'Brian checks in on the civilians whose lives are falling apart: Linda Park is disappointed in Wally West's lack of ambition, Kyle Rayner can't focus on his art, John Jones is a despairing obsessive, and Bruce Wayne is a playboy with a hair-trigger temper. O'Brian has to reunite with Plastic Man before the criminal life drags him back again, so he tried to convince them to find a way to merge.
In San Francisco, an idle wish turns everyone blind and the Leaguers intervene to help but their lack of a human anchor leads them to be reckless. The Flash figures out how to capture Id with the Lasso of Truth and as soon as the wish-granting entity is immobilized, the Cathexis cause a mammoth explosion and reveal that they are attempting to overtake our world. The only thing that stands in their way is the civilian identities of the JLA who have come to defend the world, inspired by O'Brian.
