Synopsis for "Trial by Fire (Part VI of VI)"
The city of Chongjin in North Korea has been hit by a nuclear warhead, detonated by Fernus, the Burning Martian, but luckily the League are on hand. Flash evacuates the entire population and Green Lantern contains the radiation, while the others, including the newly returned Plastic Man, face their opponent. Although no-one has been killed, the emotional upheaval caused by the 'fire' of the nuclear blast is enough to allow Fernus to begin spawning, but instead of young Burning Martians, he is instead faced with the Martian Manhunter - the faith of his colleagues has allowed him to break free of Fernus' control. Aided by Scorch, who is terribly injured in the fight, the Martian Manhunter is able to defeat Fernus, though not destroy him completely. Once it is confirmed that Fernus and he are two entirely different beings, the Martian Manhunter is welcomed back into the Jusice League, and although all the members - including Firestorm, whose powers have returned - are safe, the victory feels hollow with Scorch in a coma.
