Synopsis for "Challenging Fate"
Doctor Fate (Hector Hall) finds Nabu casually drinking at a bar. He approaches Nabu and pleads that he's ready. Nabu counters that he's not ready. After pushing the issue further, Nabu acquiesces and explains they can exist in two planes at the same time.
They head to the Tower of Fate. Hector is shown how to view everyone's fate and how they will die. He looks into the Mirror of Cagliostro and sees a vision of Hawkman attacking him for killing Hawkgirl.
Hector snaps out of the vision and back to the restaurant. He tells Nabu he doesn't accept that fate and will fight it. Nabu smiles and tells him it's inevitable.

Synopsis for "Doctor Fate"
Kent Nelson and Inza enjoy a cocktail party on a boat. Kent mentions he expected a bigger turnout. The Captain replies a stomach bug has been going around the boat. Inza decides to follow the captain as he had a vacant stare in his response. She finds many members of the ship have fallen into a pool where they are all breathing but seem to be dying.
Kent appears as Doctor Fate. He tells her that a dark devil is creating lungs out of the humans and preparing for entry into the world. He suddenly hears a man overboard request and flies outside to investigate. When he arrives to the distress call, the five bodies in the water emerge and reveal they were five fingers from a larger creature. The hand grabs Fate. Fate casts a spell that allows the greatest wish someone has to become tangible on the creature. Since the monster has no heart, it explodes.
