Quote1 For all these many years, longer than anyone would ever have guessed, Darkseid has schemed, planned, gathered power unto himself. We thought we knew what it was that lay at the center of his scheming, but we were wrong. Now.... Now, I have given him something else to do... Quote2

Synopsis for "Born Of Thunder Born of Flame"

In the beginning, the Source, the First World, was born in an empty universe. At the center of that cosmos, the Source created a Second World inhabited by gods. These Old Gods waged war against each other, and their conflict brought Ragnarok upon them, destroying their world. A wave of cosmic energy sprung from that explosion, extending across the universe. This Godwave reached Earth in its primitive age, giving birth to the Gods of Olympus, and their realm was the Third World. At the center of the Godwave, two planets formed from the fragments of the Old World, and these twin planets became New Genesis and Apokolips, also known as the Fourth World.

A brutal war started between the godly inhabitants of the two planets, resulting in the death of Izaya's wife. Avia. Darkseid left Izaya for dead, but a woman named Vayla found the wounded Izaya and nursed him. They fell in love and, in time, married, giving them a sense of peace. But that peaceful life was interrupted by Izaya's duties as a warrior, leaving his pregnant wife behind. Izaya faced Steppenwolf, Avia's murderer, and killed him in battle. But when he returned home, Vayla was dead.

Hurt by grief, Izaya wandered through the barren lands and gave up his life as a warrior. Izaya lashed out and hit a wall that remained from the Old World, but a light flashed from this wall and the Source presented itself in the form of a fiery hand writing on the wall. From that day, Izaya the Inheritor became Highfather.

Not long after, Darkseid became the ruler of Apokolips and declared a truce with New Genesis by sealing a path: both monarchs would give their sons to each other.

In the present, Highfather finishes recalling the past when Takion interrupts him, questioning his decision to fuse New Genesis and Apokolips into a single world. Highfather claims that he's done all this for the greater good of both planets, even if it meant lying to everyone about the corruption of the Source and his sacrifice.

On Apokolips' side, Darkseid's mate Tigra opens a portal to the Source and brings an Old God back to life: Thor, the God of Thunder.
