Jack Nicholson is a retired American actor and filmmaker, often considered to be one of the greatest actors of all time, best known for his portrayals of neurotic, cold characters. The winner of three Academy Awards, three BAFTA Awards, six Golden Globe Awards, and more, Nicholson portrayed many iconic characters in many iconic films over the course of his five-decade-spanning career. Some of his most celebrated performances include Randle McMurphy in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Jake Gittes in Chinatown, Jack Torrance in The Shining, and the Joker in Batman.
To accept his role as the Joker, Nicholson traded in his salary for a percentage of the box office gross, which led to his estimated income being $50 million. After the film came out, Nicholson was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor - Motion Picture Musical/Comedy. His performance also ranked #45 in the American Film Institute's list of the top fifty film villains of all time.
