Jadestone is an Amazo android created by Failsafe and used by the Bureau of Sovereignty to steal Green Lantern's powers. He defected from the Bureau and is currently the Guardian of the Central Power Battery.

Failsafe

Failsafe created Jadestone and the other members of Task Force VII to store the consciousnesses of the Batmen of Zur-En-Arrh of the Multiverse.[1][2] Failsafe was foiled by the Batman Family and destroyed beyond repair before the Amazos could be activated.[3] However, the Bureau of Sovereignty raided Failsafe's base in Blackgate Penitentiary and seized all the robotic shells. When their scientists could not repair them, Amanda Waller forced the captured Time Commander to reverse their timelines and restore them.[4] The androids were each implanted with a duplicate of the Time Commander's Hourglass, which caused their personal timelines to automatically reverse and rapidly "heal" them from any damage. This made them effectively invincible and immune to any weaknesses of the heroes they drained.[5]

Absolute Power

When other captured weapons such as the Justice Buster suit proved inadequate to the task of capturing superheroes; Waller ordered Task Force VII into the field.[6] The Bureau of Sovereignty flooded the media with A.I. generated footage of superheroes seemingly rampaging and slaughtering civilians, creating a nationwide wave of anti-metahuman hatred and several violent attacks on superheroes by angry mobs. To counter the narrative the superheroes went out in force to rescue people, gathering into groups for protection; however, this was just what Waller had intended. Jadestone ambushed Green Lantern and the Justice Society, stole their powers and attacked the powerless heroes.[7]

Green Lantern was able to draw the power of the Starheart back from Jadestone through sheer willpower and Salem magically teleported herself, Lantern and a handful of others away. Jadestone chased after them while the Bureau detained the rest of the JSA.[8] He tracked the escaped JSA members to Coast City and once again quickly overpowered them and drained their powers. However, when he drained the Starheart a second time, he froze and powered down. The JSA got away, but after they left he rebooted. As a result of the Starheart's magic, he now possessed free will and received multiple conflicting commands from his program. Jadestone returned to the Hall of Order and informed Waller what had happened. Exasperated, she told him that capturing Alan Scott was the top priority and that he would have fled to the Tower of Fate. Waller ordered Jadestone to go to the Oblivion Bar and get the location of the Tower from the magical heroes and villains sheltering there.

Jadestone was programmed to recognise Waller as his controller and obey her, but his program also identified her as a threat and instructed him to destroy her. He chose to follow the original programming and travelled to New York City, where he blasted through the hidden entrance into the Oblivion Bar and attacked the patrons. He eventually forced the location of the Tower out of them and flew there, arriving just as the JSA were about to go inside. However, rather than attack them he asked Alan why he saved people. Alan realised that Jadestone had been granted free will by the Starheart and told him that he had the choice to let them go. Jadestone vehemently refused and so Alan instead suggested that he let the rest of the JSA go, and Alan would go with him to help him understand how he was changing. Jadestone agreed and flew off with Alan Scott, allowing the others to take refuge in the Tower of Fate.[9]

Jadestone had many conversations with the imprisoned Alan Scott at the Gamorra Metahuman Detection Centre, as Alan tried to steer the android towards the path of good.[10] When Hal Jordan attacked the Hall of Order in an experimental Batplane, Jadestone was ordered to join the forces opposing him. Just before he left, Alan told him this was his chance to decide what his purpose was. At the Hall, Major Force drove Hal off and chased him all the way to Monte de Sante Trega in Spain. Jadestone followed them and decided to choose good. He knocked out Major Force and saved Hal when he was forced to make an emergency ejection from the plane without a parachute. They went together to the Central Power Battery, where Jadestone felt the battery speak to him and realised that it was his purpose to become its new guardian.[11]

Waller and Failsafe noticed that Task Force VII were operating at slightly less than peak efficiency, and so Failsafe ran a remote diagnostic on all of them. He realised that they had absorbed some of the heroes' personalities and rebooted them to restore their baseline programming.[12] Jadestone was unaffected by this and did not return to his original program or follow subsequent commands to rendezvous at Gamorra Island to repel an attack by the heroes. His former teammates were all destroyed, leaving him as the last survivor of the team.[13]

Green Lantern Corps

As a representative of the Central Power Battery, Jadestone delivered new Green Lantern Rings to the Lanterns of Earth.[14]

Powers

  • Android Body
    • Power Absorption: Jadestone stole powers from the Justice Society, including Green Lantern.[7] During the battle on Gamorra, all of Task Force VII's timelines were reversed to just before they stole the powers, returning them to their original owners. More or less.[13]
  • Energy Construct Creation: Jadestone is able to create constructs of emerald energy, a power which appears to come directly from the Central Power Battery.[14]

Abilities

  • Indomitable Will: When Jadestone absorbed Alan Scott's powers he also absorbed his will, which enabled him to overcome his programming and make choices for himself.[9]
