Around 1940, Jim Dolan, former FBI man, was the hard-hitting editor of Daring Detective Magazine, and would typically go out and find unsolved crimes, solve them, then write them up and publish them in his magazine. As a result Daring Detective was the biggest sensation of its day, in the magazine world. He famously smashed some rackets and busted some colorful criminals. He was well known to police and Federal agents all across the country, and could typically rely on their cooperation.

He was ably assisted by his secretary Sally Alden.
