Jim Gordon is an officer of the Gotham City Guard, and before that was a soldier in the army of the Waynes. He was good friends with Jonathan Kent and Martha.
History
Gordon was one of the soldiers dispatched to the port city of Leguin to defend the coastline against a possible invasion from Lemuria. Two rival armies of Lemurians fought on the beach below the city, until a water weaver leading one of the two sides summoned a tsunami and sent it crashing into the beach and city. The city was destroyed and the people were scattered. Jim regained consciousness with Jonathan half a mile from the city. They found their commander General Grant nearby, seemingly dead, but Jonathan told Jim that Grant had the power to return from death and would recover soon. Jonathan told Jim to get Grant to higher ground while he went looking for other survivors, but never returned.[1]
Amanda Waller told Jim that she had seen Jonathan and Martha sneak away with a baby boy, the son of the Lemurian queen. She intended to report them for desertion but Jim convinced her to keep it a secret, aware that Jonathan and Martha were weary of a life of war.[2] Jim left the army and joined the Gotham City Guard, believing that there was more evil on the streets of the city than on any battlefield. He and Amanda, who remained in the army and eventually became a captain, started a romantic relationship; but Jim believed it was unlikely to last as she would prioritise her self-imposed mission to protect the kingdom over anything else.[3]
Years later they heard rumours of a boy in Gotham Town who could speak to fish and realised that he was the Lemurian prince. Knowing that the boy's enemies from the sea would come for him, Jim and Waller went to Gotham to help Jonathan and Martha. They found Jonathan, Martha and the boy, whose name was Arthur, on the road as they were being ambushed by a crew of pirates. They ran in to help and were able to fight off the pirates, but their monstrous leader King Shark was too strong for them. Arthur charged at King Shark and attacked him, punching his fist elbow-deep into King Shark's chest.[2] King Shark survived and Jim and Jonathan interrogated him. He told them that he worked for Black Manta, the ruler of the sea, and that more hired killers would come after them. Jim ensured that King Shark was imprisoned for life for his crimes and gave Jonathan and Martha a remote farm belonging to his family where they could remain safe and hidden from Black Manta.[3]
