Jimmy Olsen was a reporter at the Daily Planet.

Jimmy invited Clark Kent to join the Planet's softball team. Clark won the first game with a bunt in the ninth inning, but after that was frequently late to or missed games, claiming a variety of implausible excuses. Jimmy quickly noticed that every time Clark was late corresponded to Superman responding to a crisis around the world and realised that he was Superman. Clark skipped the championship game but also did not go out as Superman that day, convincing Jimmy that Clark was not Superman, but also ruining their friendship as Jimmy believed that Clark simply did not want to spend time with him.

Nearly twenty years later, Clark revealed to the world that he was Superman in a live interview with Jimmy's sister Janet. At Janet's urging, Jimmy came to Smallville to mend fences with Clark.
