There is nothing I can do for the dead. I remember all their names, their faces. That will have to be enough. But I can protect the living.

"Jane Smith" is one of the "children" of the Great Darkness.

Jane was born before time, in a place that knew no Light. She was not human, and the realm that birthed her was both her mother and father. She was the Darkness and it was her. She belonged to it. The Dark Garden. It comforted her, bent to her whims, as it did the others like her. But she felt the truth; the Darkness was not her home nor her friend, it was a cage. Eventually, she dreamed of a sky she never seen, painted in colors she didn't know. Of others like her, thought she never seen another face. None like her had ever left The Garden. They were afraid, but she was not. So she fled for the Light and took an human form. She used the last of her power to dig a hole between her world and and Earth. She became trapped in this form, but was not alone. In the years to come, humans build Gotham City over the pit she escaped, which they originally named as "Gatham". She learned from them stories from the Bible and other gods than the dark. She thought she was safe, but there was a darkness in their hearts, and it was the path to the Garden, an open doorway. Her former realm could not pull her back, instead, it took those for whom she cared. So she stopped caring for others and stayed in the shadows that still did her bidding. But the Garden still followed, for all those with Darkness in their hearts who encounter a being like her are vulnerable to its pull. Anyone she see, anyone she speak with, anyone she loved, was taken in her place.

Eventually, the disappearances, including Cullen Row, caught the attention of Batman, who tracked Jane down. After explaining her origins and how the Dark Garden takes those around her, Batman was taken, as his heart was abundant with darkness. Jane, knowing how much Gotham needed its protector, saved him, but he insisted on saving those she had condemned. It was at this moment that Jane's kin pulled both of them into the Dark Garden. Upon seeing how Batman continued to fight through the Garden's mental torments to save Cullen, the only captive still alive, Jane was inspired to fight back against her family, sacrificing her life in the Light so Batman could escape with Cullen.[1]
