Janwillem Kroef was one of the ten humans chosen to become the next breed of immortals.

Millennium

 Main article: Millennium

Before the Guardian and the Zamaron called him to join the "Chosen," Kroef was a Minister in Pretoria, South Africa. Being the only white man, Kroef was greatly disrespectful toward his fellow Chosen, who were mostly dark-skinned or Asian. He quickly earned the disgust of everyone around him, including the heroes who were "as white as him" and where assigned to protect him. Kroef only wanted the power the Oans' promised him for his selfish goals, and he rejected all their teachings of harmony as "hippie hoorah." However, the Guardian and the Zamaron predicted he would betray their teaching, and they let him go. As he left the Green Lantern Citadel, no one attempted to stop him. Even John Stewart, fed up with Kroef's derogatory attitude, punched him in the face on his way out.[1]

New Guardians

Following his stepping out of the New Guardians, Janwillem decided to devote all his attention and efforts to asserting the "superiority of the white race" by destroying his fellow "Chosen." For that matter, he created a breed of mutants designed to kill any non-white person. He later learned that Tom Kalmaku, one of the Chosen, and his wife were expecting a baby, so Janwillen kidnapped Tegra to use the newborn's powers. During that affair, Kroef's powers he received from the Guardians started to manifest, and he was capable of instilling hate and fear in others, which allowed him to get the New Guardians under his control. He was ultimately defeated by Tom, who also manifested his new-found powers which allowed him to bring the good in people. Tom cleansed Janwillem and the New Guardians of their hatred, and Janwillem seemingly abandoned his racist ideals.[2]
