Quote1 I thought it was a joke. It was a joke. I didn't think words meant anything. They were my words. You can do what you want with your own words. But then I... I became... I was... my whole life was just... or else. Quote2
Protector src

Jason Hart, a.k.a. the Protector, was a young superhero killed during the Sanctuary massacre. Despite famously taking an anti-drug stance as his primary gimmick, Hart secretly had severe issues with drug addiction.

Hart had gone to the Sanctuary to deal with the distress of his activities as a vigilante and for rehabilitation from his drug addiction. He was accidentally killed by a mysterious force that affected a fellow patient. The threat sent the patient into distress and caused him to lose control of his powers; when Hart and other patients approached out of concern for the patient's wellbeing, they were fatally wounded. His body was found by Superman.[1][2]

Other Characteristics

  • Protector's catchphrase was "Don't do drugs, or else!", which he would frequently mock in private before his addiction became worse.
  • Protector's struggles with drug addiction in Prime Earth can be seen as a parody or subversion of his original incarnation, where he was created as a promotional character for a corporate-sponsored anti-drug campaign.
