Jebediah of Canaan is the name of The Wizard and the original Shazam in the New Earth era. Originally, he was a powerful wizard of ancient Egyptian/Canaanite origin that was bestowed the powers of Canaanite Gods and was referred to as simply the Champion, growing up to becoming an ancient hero and keeper of the Rock of Eternity. In his old age, he sought out a successor, first choosing Kahndaqi-born Black Adam, a decision he came to regret when the ancient former hero betrays him. Eventually, Shazam chose his successor in Billy Batson and began guiding the young boy who became the cornerstone of the Marvel Family. His Post-Flashpoint counterpart is known as Mamaragan.
Jebediah of Canaan was created by Bill Parker and C.C. Beck, first appearing in the Fawcett Comics publication Whiz Comics #2 (1940).
