Synopsis for Chapter 1: "Be Better"

Seven people just woke up Los Angeles. A smoker. A dog owner. A psychiatrist. A judge. A university teacher. A super hero who is murdering people. And a PR professional.

The smoker is approached in her bedroom by Batman. Seemingly unfazed, the smoker orders the man she was sleeping with to leave the room, so that she can discuss the case Batman has brought her - Captain Atom has gone rogue.

As Captain Atom argues with a man feeding pigeons in Griffith Park and the other five go through their work days, Jenny Sparks and Batman talk over the case - Superman is scanning the city from a distance, and Wonder Woman is on standby. But, invoking a pre-existing agreement between herself and the heroes, Jenny Sparks orders them all to hand back, saying she will catch Captain Atom.

As the workday ends and people start considering after-work drinks, Jenny Sparks is summoned to a crime scene - a man in Griffith Park, killed in a manner consistent with Captain Atom's powers. Touching the corpse to "taste" the ambient energy, Jenny Sparks leaves the police to secure the scene and chases the energy.

Captain Atom is standing in the wreckage of a truck that almost struck him while he was jaywalking, when he is accosted by Jenny Sparks. Captain Atom's powers have advanced to the point where his appearances fluctuates, his metallic skin flowing across his form and outfits appearing and disappearing. His ego has grown to match his expanded powers, and he rants about God. But Jenny Sparks is over a century old, and her ego and powers are as great as his.

As four million lives trundle on oblivious to her in the Los Angeles downtown, Jenny Sparks unloads a massive amount of lightning into Captain Atom and lectures him about her godfather, Albert Einstein, who said confidently that quantum improbability was impossible and spent the last decades of his life being proven wrong. And about how, for all the mythic weight that super heroes gather around themselves, their powers are a result of luck and blind chance, and they die like everyone else, full of regret.

But Captain Atom is not dead. He is able to grab Jenny Sparks by the neck and muster the clarity to recall a past adventure where they met. Jenny Sparks was a name to inspire fear and respect, once, long ago. But Captain Atom breaks her neck and walks away, saying that she doesn't have the authority anymore...
