Jim Flagg was an officer in the U.S. Marines during World War II.
History
Early in 1942, Captain Flagg's USMC unit established a fortified oil and arms base on a Pacific island, protected by an experimental electrical magno-field. Despite an onslaught of Japanese forces, the field proved protective and the oil base proved productive.
A German mole agent planted among Flagg's Marines tipped off the enemy to the island's location, and the Japanese sent a large number of carrier-based biplanes to attack it, but the paralyzing magno-field destroyed most or all of them. The German spy made a second attempt to shut down the defensive system, and was caught in the act by Captain Flagg, but killed himself to avoid interrogation.
Later in 1942, Flagg's Marine unit deployed, in P.T. boats, from the battleship USS Liberty in Takayi Harbor, and sank a large Japanese warship, then were counterattacked by a twin-engine bomber, which destroyed the PTs. Flagg survived and waded ashore in Japanese territory, fought one infantryman and stole his rifle, found an arsenal disguised as a rice storage building, and created a time-delay fire-starter from his binoculars, blowing up the ammo.
By very good luck, Capt. Flagg found a secret airbase, with Japanese paratroops embarking onto a transport plane, and by very very good luck, he found a straggler, jumped him, stole his uniform and parachute, and scrambled out to board the plane. These paratroops were raiding an American base, and Flagg jumped out right along with them, then on the ground he was able to isolate their commander, take him down, and otherwise cause enough trouble to disrupt the attack, enabling the outnumbered defending Marines to win the ensuing firefight. The Marines captured the mis-uniformed Flagg, who confirmed his nationality by reciting the Constitution, then returned to duty aboard the USS Liberty.
Later in 1942, Capt.Flagg's marines were on patrol when a Japanese force invaded their Pacific island base. Flagg and his platoon recaptured a large shore cannon, and used it to destroy a large Japanese cruiser. They then raided a Japanese prison camp, and freed enough captured Marines to re-take the island.
