In 2019, Phoenix starred as Arthur Fleck in Todd Phillips' psychological thriller film Joker, loosely based on the iconic DC Comics villain. The film was a massive commercial hit, becoming one of the highest grossing films of all time, and despite polarizing critical reactions, Phoenix's performance gained widespread acclaim, winning him Best Actor at the 92nd Academy Awards. Phoenix reprised the role in 2024's Joker: Folie à Deux, which was similarly polarizing, but garnered similar acclaim for Phoenix's performance.
