Quote1 Safe haven? Is that what you think this is? Quote2
John Constantine src

John Constantine is a wizard in a not distant future who was forced to go underground after Merlin began hunting all the magicians on Earth.

John Constantine was a famous master of dark arts and, until the rise of Merlin, a member of the Justice League Dark. When the ancient wizard Merlin returned to the Earth, he began a crusade against all the practioners of magic and supernatural creatures, clashing against the Leaguers and defeated them, also murdering some of them: John was also believed to have been killed by the wizard.

However, John survived Merlin's rampage but was forced to hide himself and found refuge in a safe haven in the east zone of Las Vegas where Madame Xanadu was hiding people long before Merlin's witch hunts: in fact, the place was cloaked by a spell to make it invisible to Merlin's powers.

At some point in time before 2030, John crossed paths with a Knight of Merlin's army who gave him a scar to his left eye. Despite the might of his opponent, John managed to survive the encounter.

In 2030, John Constantine went to Rory Regan's black market along with an army of magicians and creatures, including Zauriel, looking for protection charms but avoiding to give the former Ragman further details about his plans.

Some time later, Regan, Zatanna Zatara and Detective Chimp tracked John's spell to the place it was being casted and were welcomed by the dark magician; Zatanna was surprised to see him alive with her own eyes after believing him to be dead for many years. John took them to Xanadu who explained to them that her cards were telling her and John to hide an old man who was revealed by the demon Etrigan to be Khalid Nassour, better known as Doctor Fate.
