John Diggle is the best friend of Oliver Queen and a member of Team Arrow. He joined Oliver's crusade shortly after and began operating as a vigilante, eventually taking the name, Spartan. After Oliver retired from vigilantism, Diggle would take up the mantle of Green Arrow.


Early Years

John Diggle was born in 1977. He served in the United States Special Forces as a Green Beret, under the command of Theodore Gaynor. Upon his retirement from active duty, he entered private security.

Helping the Arrow

Diggle was eventually hired by Moira Queen to act as a bodyguard for her son, Oliver, after he was attacked by unknown assailants. Oliver largely attempted to avoid Diggle as much as he could, much to the bodyguard's annoyance. But when Diggle is injured by an assassin, Oliver is ultimately compelled to reveal his identity to him. Diggle initially resigned, voicing his disapproval of how Oliver had been spending his nights, but ultimately relents, becoming the voice of reason in Oliver's crusade.

Deadshot

After finding out the deadly assassin known as Deadshot, was responsible for the death of his brother, Diggle joined Oliver in his crusade to clean up the city.[2] Because of this Diggle, developed a rivalry with Deadshot.

Becoming Green Arrow

After Oliver had decided to retire as a vigilante, due to wanting to focus on being a father, he asked Diggle to carry on the legacy of the Green Arrow. Diggle accepted and became the new leader of Team Arrow.[3]


Abilities

  • Archery: Diggle is profient at archery, as shown when he had posed as the Arrow to clear Oliver's name. Despite this, Diggle is highly skilled at wielding a crossbow, which he began using during his time as Green Arrow.[4]
  • Aviation: Due to his time in the military, Diggle is an expert in piloting helicopters.
  • Bilingualism: Diggle is capable of fluently speaking English and Arabic.
  • Demolitions: As a former soldier, Diggle is an expert in planting and detonating explosives.
  • Interrogation: John is skilled in interrogating criminals in order to gain intel.[5]
  • Leadership: Diggle has shown himself to be a very capable leader, as he led Team Arrow when Oliver temporarily retired.
  • Firearms: Diggle is an expert marksman and highly skilled with firearms, he has carried a Glock 17 as his sidearm and has used many other firearms such as assault rifles and a grenade launcher.
  • Martial Arts: Due to his vigorous training with Oliver over the years, Diggle has become a master martial artist, possessing skill in a variety of fighting styles. His skills have allowed him to swiftly take down trained assassins, as well as armed mercenaries.
  • Military Protocol: John is was once a part of Special Forces and has considerable experience in live combat, having done three tours in Afghanistan.
  • Peak Human Condition: John is in top physical condition. He engages regularly in intense exercises and spars with Oliver Queen in the Arrowcave during his spare time.[4]
  • Tactical Analysis: Diggle is an expert in formulating and executing plans.
  • Theology: John Diggle was an ordained minister. He married Carly and his brother, Andy together. Later, he married Barry Allen and Iris West, as well as Oliver Queen and Felicity Smoak on the same day.[9]
  • Weaponry: Diggle has shown great skill in a variety of weaponry, including firearms, knives, and sticks. He also possesses basic skill in archery and swordsmanship.

  • Diggle's brother Andrew is likely named after Andy Diggle, the writer of Green Arrow: Year One, upon which Arrow is largely based.
