John Hurt (b. January 22, 1940 – d.January 25, 2017) was a renowned British actor who portrayed High Chancellor Sutler in V for Vendetta.

Professional History

Sir John Hurt was a widely renowned British character actor, often considered one of the greatest actors of all time, who had roles in many films and series across various genres for decades. Some of his most notable film roles include John Merrick in The Elephant Man, Kane in Alien, Winston Smith in 1984, Garrick Ollivander in the Harry Potter films, Professor Broom in Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army, and Control in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

Hurt also appeared in animated films, most notably as Hazel in Watership Down, Aragorn in the 1978 animated adaptation of The Lord of the Rings, and the Horned King in The Black Cauldron. His most notable television roles include Caligula on I, Claudius, the Great Dragon on Merlin, and the War Doctor on Doctor Who. He reprised the latter role in the audio drama series The War Doctor.

Hurt's only contribution to a DC Comics adaptation was as High Chancellor Adam Sutler in the film adaptation of V for Vendetta. He also played two actors pretending to be Sulter on a talk show humiliating him in the same film. The film received positive reviews, as did Hurt's performance.
