Having power, even fighting—that doesn't make you heroic in my book. Heroism is about sacrifice.

In the not so distant future, engineering specialist John Stewart becomes a Yellow Lantern in a desperate attempt to save Earth, and the rest of the universe.
History
John Stewart was one of three representatives for Earth for the Joint Program for Allied Science, making a peaceful cultural exchange with the Llarans. This was interrupted when the Llarans' ship was attacked without warning, and they took the humans, including Stewart, hostage in retaliation, bringing them to Llarian Prime under the escort of a Yellow Lantern.
However, after a short stay in a cell, the three were broken out by the same Lantern, who gave away his ring and battery to the trio, explaining that he could no longer wear the ring without shame.
John's coworker, Dr. Muturi, is the first to wear the ring, using it to help them all escape the planet. However, she soon realized that she was too angry to operate the ring properly, and hands it over to Stewart, who manages to get them on their way to Earth, before changing course to in response to a distress call from Hal Jordan, who had been stranded after the seeming destruction of the Green Lantern Central Power Battery.
After taking some time to let Hal recover and compare notes, they came up with a plan to stop the threat that they all got wrapped up in: the last living Oan was seemingly planning to conquer the universe with his army of Yellow Lanterns, made up of recruits from the other-dimensional location of Qward and former Green Lantern Corps members. It was one of them who had destroyed the Llarian ship, after Earthly forces had refused to do so.
Stewart was the advanced scout, locating the Guardian before being attacked by two Qwardian Lanterns, with the rest of his team following behind in a prototype FTL ship. He managed to defeat them, only to be met by a squad of Yellow Lanterns as he attempted to leave Oa's atmosphere. John then helped to hold the line while Jordan dealt with the Guardian, and witnessed his sacrifice to save the universe.
Afterwards, he considered giving up the ring, but the former leader of the Green Lantern Corps, Arisia Rrab, helped to convince him to keep it, saying that she would contact him, implying that she was planning to reform the Yellow Lanterns as a force for good, now that the green rings were powerless. John then returned to Earth, and started making plans to rebuild the FTL ship, hoping to use it to help make a better future.
